Is my town too small for a pet store?
Hi,
My town has approx. 1600 people living there, and there’s no pet store. I’m thinking of opening one, in fact I’ve already requested a business license for a pet and garden supply store. There are about 5 local groceries who sell basic pet food for cats & dogs: Pedigree & Whiskas.
My store would offer more of a variety of pet supplies & food as well as Birds & Freshwater Aquarium Fish, and well, garden supplies & decor.
Is my working population large enough? You think?
Thanks!
Hi there,
1600 is really very few people. You can probably do the math. I don’t know the statistics, but you should find out what % of people own pet, etc.. .and see if it’s worth it if half of your town’s pet owner only use you.
On top of that, that means your town should be quite small in size as well commonly. That means your neighbour towns are quite close. Meaning that a lot of neighbor-town pet shops have already built certain relation with your town’s pet owners. So that’s the challenge. Lack of people, with competition from neighbor towns. That’s just to mention the problem you might encounter.
However, I think with passion and hardwork, it’s very do-able. That’s if you’re really the only pet store in town. Then make it nice. Give no reason for your town folks to cross the borders. Give no room for new comers to open up another one in the town. And since your town is pet-shop-less, there’s a chance that there are lots of people that don’t own pets or thought of owning pets for this reason. You should do something to push that trend in your town.
Other advice would be, see that there’s a big bottleneck there as well due to your small population. Even if it works, you might not get super rich from that one store. Think long term plans on how to attract nieghbour town’s folks, as well as opening up franchises. Online business is popular and can get your far as well.
I sincerely wish you good luck!
